When I think of pitching, I think of an essay. If there’s different ways to write an essay then there are ways to pitch to a brand or a business. This is going to sound like an English lesson, so stick with me here. There are more than one kind of essays correct?
- Argumentative
- Expository
- Narrative
- Descriptive
Based on your goal of pitching to a brand, which type of essay would be the best fit?
If you said Argumentative then great choice!
What is an Argumentative essay?
If you are still here, thank you so much for sticking with me. Here I am going to give a short and sweet lesson on what an argumentative essay is and then how it connects to what you’re trying to do.
You may have actually heard this phrased differently. It can also be called a Persuasive essay. Persuasive just means attempting to convince someone to follow your point of view. This fits best with your goal of trying to pitch to a client or a brand.
First, the point of this type of essay is using logic and reason to argue that you have the best point of view. Essentially, you are arguing that you are the best person for this brand to take on. You have got to convince them that you really are the one and only choice possible.
After you’ve figured out what your logic and reason is, and figured out how you’re going to argue, next is to take it even further by “writing” your pitch. Before you try to write your spiel, you need to understand what has to go into this essay. Here’s a list of what to do first:
- Make a list of who you want to pitch to
- Do your research to find out as much as you can about the brand or company
- Follow, study and engage with their content
Time to “write” that pitch!
Once you’ve done the research and you intimately know them. You know what makes them tick, what makes them successful, and you know their insides and out. You’re ready to write.
Any good essay always has the hook. Not quite a pirate’s hook, but it works in a similar way. A hook grabs the attention of the reader. In this case for you, it should grab the attention of the client.
What goes into the hook? Great question!
Here is a list of what it usually can be:
- Question
- Strong Statement
- Fact or Statistic
- Metaphor or Simile
- A Story
- A Joke
- A Description
- or a Quotation
Next thing to do is figure out which best fits your needs. How are you going to get their attention? If you need a few examples of a good hook, check out this website-https://papersowl.com/blog/essay-hook-examples
Yes, this is a website geared more towards college students, but don’t let that deter you from your pitch! It still works the same way!
Introduction: Who are you?
Introducing yourself is one of the most important aspect of a pitch. Businesses and clients need to know who you are. Typically in an essay, an introduction is simply explaining what you will be writing about and how it is important. For a pitch, it acts in a similar way. I’m going to use myself as an example.
My name is Vanessa Bacellar, the creative Deaf creator and blogger behind Find Our Joy living a joyful life celebrating the in between and finding home wherever you are. I love to work with brands who we support as a family and are an organic fit for me. I love to help others realize their dreams. I create my own DIY projects and share with others so that they can feel the pride that I feel when building something with my own two hands. Followers come to my page because I give out the advice they are seeking.
Can you see how it is slightly different than an introduction in an essay?
Make sure to add how you knew of the brand or product. Connect yourself to them.
You just did the beginning of the pitch. Now it is time to get the rest of it.
Finish out the essay
Almost done! I promise you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Here is a question to ponder on: WHY YOU?
Think about how you can convince the brand or client that they should want you. What makes you a better choice than anyone else. Write that. Convince them.
More questions to ponder:
- What do you want from them?
- What can you offer?
- Why them?
- Why now?
The rest of your essay or pitch is all about answering these questions in the best way possible. Share your plan as detailed as possible. When you’ve done that and you can tell you’ve got them hooked, give them the CTA (Call To Action). This helps you let the potential client know what to do next if they are interested in what you have to offer.
The end result:
It can only go two ways; either they got you and you got a brand sponsor, or they feel you’re not what they need at the moment.
Let me tell you this: It is okay. It is okay if they tell you that this is not the best fit, don’t despair. Just keep on swimming. Just keep going until you get that first yes. The first of many YES!
If you did get a YES, then go shout it on the highest mountain for all to hear, because YOU DID IT!

May I simply say what a relief to uncover somebody that really understands what theyre discussing over the internet. You certainly know how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More and more people really need to check this out and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that youre not more popular because you certainly have the gift.
