First thing I want you to know is that I am SO happy you are here! Please be aware that even though my page is Find Our Joy, my life is not all about joy. That is just a dream and I wouldn’t want that anyway. I am here to give you pieces of my joy in hopes that it becomes yours too by bringing you happiness, sparking ideas and understanding my own unique perspective. If you are interested in DIY projects, motherhood, travel, Brazilian or Deaf culture, and living life with less toxins, this is for you.

My name is Vanessa Bacellar, the creative Deaf content creator behind Find Our Joy living a joyful life celebrating the in between and finding home wherever you are. When pandemic started, I had to become a stay at home mom to protect my son and his father who went through chemo treatments for his lymphoma. I lost my way for a while because I did not know who I was anymore outside of being a mother until one day I realized if I was going to stay at this house, I might as well do something about it. Once I started DIY, I never looked back and it became my passion. I believe that your home should be a space of feeling joy to be in so I started this blog to show others. I am currently renovating my 1976 builder grade home in Louisiana and my beach inn in Brazil.

Here are some random facts about me:

I was not born Deaf. I was diagnosed with meningitis at the age of 1.5 that almost left me paralyzed and nearly killed me but were graced with hearing loss and scoliosis instead. I had to take swimming classes to learn how to walk again. I currently wear cochlear implant and I can lip read very well depending on the facial expression and mouth movements. It took me a long time but I am finally in a place where I embrace my disability as part of my identity.

I left my job as an analytical chemist and high school science teacher to be a content creator and blogger. It is not everyday you find a blogger who is Deaf and I want to be part of that change.

I have a toddler son who is my greatest joy and he is learning 3 languages: English, American Sign Language and Portuguese. He is my WHY.

I was born in Brazil but I was raised in Northampton, MA and New York City, NY. I currently reside in Louisiana but I travel a lot and my DIY inspirations come from out there. You just got to pay attention.

I was featured in Home Depot and Lowes. I won an Orange Tank Tier 1 competition for Home Depot during the Haven Conference 2021 for upcycle playhouse.
